In this essay, you are taking on the “persona” of a Jewish or German Immigrant of the late 19th century. Write a two-three page letter to relatives back home in which you describe your experience as part of the “huddled masses” including neighborhood, housing, work, and opportunity in the United States. Required sources is Unit 5 – Lesson 18 “Huddled Masses” and also listen to “The Streets Were Paved With Gold” and “Becoming Americans (found in the Huddle Masses video lesson – Additional Resources – The American Jewish Experience.) These oral histories give a good background and explanation of the immigrant experience.
